Driver in fatal Newlands crash appears in court

The driver of the taxi that ploughed into four school girls, killing three of them, near the VN Naik School for the Deaf, will make his first appearance in the Ntuzuma Magistrates Court today.

The 33-year-old handed himself over to police yesterday after the collision on Dumisani Makhaye Drive, north of Durban in the morning.
He is facing three charges of culpable homicide.

Simon Zwane who's with the Road Traffic Management Corporation says they're horrified and concerned by the number of pedestrian road deaths.
"Our statistics are showing that 38% of people dying on the roads are pedestrians. The investigating officer and the prosecutor must oppose bail. Reckless and negligent driving, and hit-and-run incidents are far too many. These incidents are claiming far too many lives. It's about time we become serious about stopping road fatalities."
