Deputy Mayor urges Westville residents to take back their streets

Hundreds of concerned Westville residents have made their voices heard - following a recent spike in crime in the leafy suburb.

More than 600 people gathered at the Truro Hall last night for a public meeting attended by Metro and SAPS representatives - as well as eThekwini deputy mayor, Fawzia Peer.

The area has grabbed headlines in recent months - following several murders and an increase in housebreakings there. 


In the latest incident, an ADT response officer was gunned down in Westville North at the weekend. 


Peer told residents that they need to join forces with police to take back their streets.

Westville CPF spokesperson, Caz Weeks, says the community raised several issues during the meeting - including police manpower problems.


"We were advised, however, that the CCTV installations would take place immediately, and that resources would be deployed to the area as an when they became available. The community is wanting that actioned now. With the incidents happening in Westville, and the rise in crime in the area, we're requiring urgent, immediate attention to this," he said.

Weeks says an additional eight new cases have been reported in Westville - since the public meeting was held last night.
