Delayed school reopening threatens academic year: Motshekga
Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga says the department cannot continue postponing the school calendar - especially for disadvantaged schools.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday in the North West, Motshekga says any further delay to the school year would pose a serious threat to the academic year.
"It is poor learners who will be highly disadvantaged if we keep on postponing. They have not had the benefits. Some schools can start term three because they were able to react with their learners.
"But other learners have not had the privilege, which means they still have to do term two work during term three and they are expected to write the same exams with learners whose teachings were not interrupted during the lockdown."

She says teachers whose personal protective equipment (PPEs) have arrived should have reported for duty today.
Motshekga confirms that schools will reopen next week Monday.
"Teachers who have received their PPEs are expected to carry on with their work and responsibilities as spelt out. Importantly the sector agreed that effective teaching and learning should resume on 8 June."
Motshekga also stresses that schools who are not ready - or have no PPE's should not reopen on Monday.
