DA welcomes Pietermaritzburg landfill site ruling
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has welcomed a court judgment against Msunduzi Municipality over its handling of the New England Road landfill site.

Pietermaritzburg locals have repeatedly complained to the city about the landfill, where several fires have broken out and has been a breeding ground for criminal elements.
The South African Human Rights Commission stepped in, and the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday found Msunduzi violated several environmental laws through its mismanagement of the site.
The court gave officials 30 days to act and improve conditions.
The DA's Chris Pappas says the ruling is an indictment on a failed municipality.
"It is unfair and unsustainable that residents, institutions and businesses are forced to take government and especially municipalities to court to get basic services delivered.

"It is up to residents in the upcoming local elections to choice political parties and candidates that put their interests first and that have a proven track record of delivering services to all the people."
