Court told Ramaphosa entitled to recognise Misuzulu as king

The High Court in Pretoria has heard that President Cyril Ramaphosa is entitled to rely on advice given by the former Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Nation Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi on the issue of succession.

Advocate Marumo Moerane is leading arguments on behalf of Ramaphosa and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs on day two of the court battle for the Zulu throne.

AmaZulu King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini's half-brother Prince Mbonisi wants the court to declare the decision by Ramaphosa to recognise the king as unlawful.

Ramaphosa recognised King Misuzulu as the reigning monarch of the Zulu nation last year.

Moerane told the court on Tuesday that the Royal family identified him as king before the president's recognition.

"We submit that the president was entitled to rely on the representations made by Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Therefore, we submit that the president's reliance on the judgment and representations in taking the impugned decision to issue the certificate of recognition to Prince Misuzulu was valid."
