CONFIRMED: Zandile Gumede agrees to step aside, says ANC KZN

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed that former eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede is complying with party rules and has agreed to step aside.

In line with the National Executive Committee (NEC) resolution - 12 other KZN members have voluntarily stepped aside. 

Provincial secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli says they still need to meet with four councillors from rural municipalities, who need to abide by the rule.

He says Gumede is restricted from representing the ANC but she'll continue to participate in the portfolio committees. 

"We explained in detail about the position of the organisation and she accepted it unconditionally. 

"What's next is that, practically she will no longer be participating in the interim leadership structure of the ANC in the eThekwini region and certainly, she remains a member of the Provisional Legislator but without permission to speak in the sittings of the Legislator unless sanctioned by the chief whip of the ANC in the Legislator."

The ANC gave party members - facing criminal charges - a 30-day ultimatum in March to step aside or face suspension. Gumede and her co-accused are facing fraud and corruption-related charges linked to a multi-million-rand DSW tender.
