Childline KZN stands against child abandonment
Updated | By Portia Cele
Childline KZN says they're taking a strong stance against the abandoning of babies in the province.
This follows recent cases of new-born babies being recovered in and around Durban.
Police pulled a foetus from a storm water drain in the Mpumalanga Township, west of Durban last month.
The body of the baby was also recovered by Pietermaritzburg search and rescue in a pit lavatory, in the KZN Midlands' Impendle.
While north of Durban, a baby now being cared for in a place of safety was rescued in an hours-long operation in Newlands East - also from a storm drain.
The organisation's Adeshnie Naicker says seven cases have been reported just in the last two months.
"We as a child protection agency find these figures appalling. We are asking other organisations to join us in this march. The more voices there are, the more we will be heard. We are hoping to create mass awareness around this issue of babies being dumped. We are hoping to let the public know that there are other options than dumping your baby."
The march takes place in the Durban CBD tomorrow. The march starts at 11.25am outside the Durban City Hall and will proceed toward the Amphitheatre, on the Durban Beachfront.
