Call for ban on booze adverts ahead of looming third Covid wave

The SA Alcohol Policy Alliance has recommended government take a more proactive approach - amid fears of a third Covid-19 wave.

It says instead of imposing a complete ban later - government should consider introducing some restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol now.

The Alliance's Maurice Smithers believes dropping advertisements is also the way to go.
"So now we are saying to people drink less, drink in a safe way, don't drink in a way that it is going to actually result in situations where hospital beds are taken up and that the virus is spread.
"On the other hand, we are advertising the product in a way that is encouraging people to actually drink. It doesn't really make any sense.

"So, therefore, we believe that government should just say no more advertising - it's counterintuitive.
