This after the families of patients raised concern, saying the conditions there are appalling.

The Social Development Department inspected the Durban and Coastal Mental Health Society in Sherwood on Wednesday.

It caters for some 90 residents.

MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza says she's very concerned.

"We are not happy in terms of the management you can see that a lot still needs to be done. In fact, in terms of service providers who provide food - this is not quality food and is not in line with what should be palatable for our people.

"As much as we assist the most vulnerable, but we want to restore dignity to our communities. You cannot give someone something you cannot eat yourself."

Chairperson of the facility's board, Sithandiwe Mkhize's admitted they're short-staffed.

"Going forward, we will discuss with the CEO to ensure that the numbers of people that work, especially with this resident because it's big - are increased.

"If you are coming down the passage there's a funny smell - that means it's either there's no one cleaning. I think we need to correct that."
