Baby X case: Ward councillor testifies during sentencing
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
The Durban High Court has heard of the Chatsworth community's shock and outrage after Baby X, as she has become known, was killed in 2014.
This as arguments for sentencing for the toddler's mother, who killed her, got underway yesterday.
The 3-year-old was beaten to death. Her mother was found guilty of a total of 16 charges.
Proceedings got underway with the State calling ward councillor, Brandon Pillay to the stand to testify in aggravation of sentencing.
Pillay told the court he had planned a funeral for Baby X because he wanted to give her a “dignified end” after society had let her down.
He said thousands had attended.
Pillay said he had seen photographs of the child before she died and that she looked like an angel, but afterwards she had scars, bruises and burn marks.
“The biggest part of this was as a community, we failed," he said.
