Mother in Chatsworth's Baby X case guilty of murder
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Durban High Court has found a Durban mother guilty of the abuse and murder of her three-year olddaughter, known as Baby X.
The child is said to have been starved, tortured, sexually assaulted and tied to a bed in her Chatsworth home.
The woman's mother and baby X's grandmother, was also a co-accused in the case. The 58-year-old died earlier this year.
Nearly four years after Baby X’s brutal murder, Judge Mohini Moodley found the toddler's mother guilty of murder, failing to provide medical assistance to the child, assault and child abuse.
Moodley handed down a lengthy judgement, drawing on detailed information from the child's siblings.
Graphic details about the abuse baby X endured before she died was read out in court.

Moodley ruled that the woman made several attempts to mislead the court and that she knew exactly what she was doing.
Although saying the mother showed signs of diminished cognitive responsibility, Moodley agreed with two psychologists who found she could distinguish between right and wrong.
The 35-year-old's own mother stood trial with her until she died in custody earlier this year.
