Auditors appointed to probe SANEF donations

An independent audit firm has been roped in to investigate a string of donations meant for the group of journalists known as the SABC 8.

The journalists were suspended by the public broadcaster in 2016 for challenging some editorial policies under the leadership of then SABC boss, Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

A fund was then set up by the South African National Editors Forum to assist the group with their living expenses while on suspension.

This week, TimesLive reported that R100,000 was donated by facilities management company BOSASA, whose former COO has been giving explosive testimony at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture about bribes allegedly paid to government officials and reporters.

SANEF's Mary Papayya says they have decided to bring in auditors because a public perception that the forum and BOSASA may have a cosy relationship may have been created.
