Arrests must result in convictions: Community Safety

KwaZulu-Natals' Community Safety MEC says he has begun talks with the province's judiciary to ensure that arrests are not wasted by a poor conviction rate.

Mxolisi Kaunda, the ANC in the province's new eThekwini's mayoral candidate, had been speaking on the sidelines of the launch of a Saps Stabilisation Operation.

The operation was launched in Durban yesterday.

It will see the police tackle violent crimes like hijackings, murder and kidnappings in eThekwini's hotspots.

Police will also zero in on illegal liquor establishments and home and business break-ins.

Kaunda says it is important that criminality is removed from local communities.

"Those who have not yet been arrested become the targets, especially those wanted for murders, attempted murder and domestic violence and other trio crimes -- including robberies and hijackings," explained Kaunda.

Meanwhile, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal announced Kaunda as its nomination for eThekwini Mayor yesterday.

The party had previously redeployed all members serving on Executive Committees at eThekwini and Msunduzi, citing performance.

Former mayor, Zandile Gumede is facing corruption-related charges linked to what the Hawks believe was a dodgy multi-million Rand waste removal tender, dating back to 2016.

Former Msunduzi mayor, Themba Njilo was also axed. That municipality has been placed under administration.
