More arrests as looting and protests continue in KZN

According to police spokesperson Jay Naicker, police will remain on high alert throughout the day as incidents of looting and theft continue throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

The looting of shops and bottle stores in several parts of KZN forms part of the protests demanding the release of former president Jacob Zuma from prison.

In Marianhill alone, nine people were arrested for the looting of shops in that area and they have been charged for theft, public violence and contraventions of the Disaster Management Act 52 of 2007.

On Saturday, there were a number of attempts to break into bottle stores but police officers were able to quickly respond to reports before the perpetrators were able to obtain the liquor.

Police will reman on high alert throughout Sunday and will be deployed along the major routes and hotspots throughout the province.

The Jacob Zuma Foundation has stated that violence and protests will not end until the former president is released from prison.

On Sunday morning, it is believed that a Checkers store in Reservoir Hills was looted after Facebook Group Durban Traffic posted videos and pictures on their page. We are awaiting confirmation from the authorities on the matter.
