Arrest in Hillbrow Theatre shooting

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting at the Hillbrow Theatre.

He was arrested in the Tembisa Hospital where he was already under police guard. 

Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says police nabbed the 33-year-old man during an armed robbery at a store at the Greenstone Mall on Sunday.

The suspect is alleged to have killed one and seriously wounded eight others after randomly opening fire at the theatre on Sunday.

"It is alleged that the suspect jumped onto the stage while a band was performing. He then grabbed a microphone and claimed that he will stop the band unless he gets back his cellphone. Allegedly, the audience protested and he fired several shots randomly. He then fled the scene on foot," Dlamini explains. 

He says four other suspects managed to evade arrest following the armed robbery at the mall. 

"Police and mall security chased the suspects as they were fleeing after the robbery. He was arrested and four others managed to escape. During his arrest, he sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital under police guard," Dlamini adds.

Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Deliwe De Lange is satisfied that the suspect has been brought to book within 48 hours. 

"This has been the most horrible incident that has been experienced by the audience who were at the theatre to enjoy themselves. Police will never rest until the suspect gets what he deserves. Justice will be allowed to take its course," the commissioner says. 

The suspect faces charged of murder, attempted murder as well as armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Police suspect he may have been involved in other serious and violent crimes.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
