Prosecutors say a man charged in connection with the assault and murder of KwaMakhutha woman Anele Bhengu has abandoned his bid for bail.

The 21-year-old's body was found in the Hill area last month.
She had been stabbed. It's believed she'd also been raped.
KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Kara says Thulani Nandos Cele made an appearance in the Umbumbulu Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

"The matter had previously remanded for bail information. However, he abandoned his application for bail at yesterday's court appearance.
"This means that he will remain in custody. The matter was remanded to the 3rd of August for further investigations."
Bhengu's murder sparked widespread condemnation, with local groups saying it heightened fears over safety for the LGBTQIA+ community.
