Alleged school racism: KZN Education calls for calm
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal, Portia Cele
The KZN Department of Education is calling on George Campbell School of Technology pupils to remain calm as it deals with allegations of racism.

Pupils brought the school to a complete standstill yesterday. Classes were suspended after they protested - accusing some teachers of racism.
The pupils allege they're being called monkeys and other racial slurs.

The department's Kwazi Mthethwa says they're waiting for a report from the district. He's hopeful teaching will resume as per normal next week.
"We understand the anger that comes with being racially abused and being called the k-word. We have to process this accordingly. We are not going to jump or be emotional a bout this matter. We have to deal with it, follow the right channels and do it by the book," he says.

Meanwhile, this parent believes protesting pupils should use channels that do not compromise learning.
"The parents are aware of the allegations. However, we don't feel that all the children should be disrupted during their lessons. This is not a school where you pay a minimum fee to go to," she says.
