Learners at the George Campbell School of Technology say they have been on the receiving end of racial slurs by some teachers who have referred to them as monkeys.

The learners say the k-word was also used.

Police have arrived on scene and pupils not taking part in the protest were seen running out of the school.

Some pupils say teaching will not continue until their demands are met.

"Hopefully we are going to hear from management, but until then learners are saying there'll be no teaching or learning at the school. Not until the teachers that are calling us such names are out of the school," one pupil told Newswatch.

Meanwhile, the KZN Education officials say action will be taken against any teachers found to have directed racial slurs at pupils.

The department's Kwazi Mthethwa says officials were sent to the school yesterday.

"It seems to us that the matter was reported but it did not reach the level of head office. So now that we have been made aware of such incidents, we are going to take over and deal with it," he says.
