Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
The man arrested for the murder of nine-year-old Sadia Sukhraj - says he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Sibonelo Mkhize stands accused of having stolen Sadia's father's car and driven off with the child.
A shooting ensued and Sadia - as well as a second suspect - were both killed.
Mkhize's trial got underway in the Durban High Court yesterday and is set to continue today.
On his version, and as per statement read into the record by this lawyer - Mkhize was an innocent bystander. He claims he was on his way home after purchasing cannabis from a nearby informal settlement when he was accosted by two men.

He said they bundled him into a car and drove him to the crime scene where he was assaulted by a mob and arrested. He's pleaded not guilty to all the charges levelled against him and denied having knowledge of the crimes in question.
Earlier yesterday, Sadia's father emotionally recounted receiving the news of his daughter's death at the hospital. He's told the court he couldn't believe his child was taken away from him in seconds.
