2018 Year in Review: KZN mourns Sadia Sukhraj

Tensions mounted south of Durban when little Sadia Sukraj was shot dead in a botched robbery in May.

The little girl had been sitting in her father's car in Shallcross, near Chatsworth when robbers tried to take the vehicle.

A shootout ensued and Sadia sustained a fatal gunshot wound in the crossfire.

The 9-year-old was rushed to hospital but tragically passed away.

One of the suspects died when the stolen vehicle overturned. A second man was arrested.

32-year-old Sibonelo Mkhize has made several court appearances to date. He is facing two counts of murder, one of robbery and another of kidnapping.

The shooting thrust crime in the Chatsworth area into the spotlight, with community members protesting outside the local police station in the wake of the incident.

It also prompted Police Minister Bheki Cele to make several visits to the area.
