Officials say initial indications are that the truck experienced a front tyre burst. The heavy goods vehicle then veered across the road and into several oncoming vehicles, including a 22-seater minibus.

Some 22 of the victims had been travelling in the minibus taxi.

“What happened today is nothing short of a disaster. This is indeed a sad day for our province. We are worried that this accident happened on an area clearly demarcated as a high accident zone," said MEC for Transport

Makoma Makhurupetje.

"Given the fact that this is a third accident to happen within a short space of time on the N1 road, we think it is now time for SANRAL and the national government to declare a disaster on this road, as we cannot continue to lose lives in this manner,” she said.

ER24 says emergency services were called to the scene at around 4pm.

The road had to be closed in both directions.
