Netflix drops 'Squid Game' season 2 teaser

On your marks. Get set. Greenlight! Netflix officially renews 'Squid Game' for a second season.

Netflix has announced that the South Korean fictional survival drama series, 'Squid Game', will be returning exclusively to the platform. 

A short teaser for the season was released on Sunday. It features the "red light, green light" doll known as Young-hee. 

"Red light… GREENLIGHT! Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2!" Netflix wrote on Twitter.

Hwang Dong-Hyuk, who is the creator and writer of the series, shared a special message with fans about what they can expect in the new season. 

"It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show," he wrote. 

Lee Jung-jae returns as Seong Gi-hun - a divorced gambler struggling to support his daughter. The Front Man - a masked character who oversees the games - is back as well.

Hwang hinted that Young-hee's "boyfriend" will make an appearance in the new season. He revealed that "the man in the suit with ddakji might be back". 

There's still no word on when season 2 will be released, but production is said to be in the early stages. According to Variety, season 2 could premier in late 2023 or early 2024.

Social media users are thrilled that 'Squid Game' season 2 has officially been given the green light. 

The series clocked 1.65-billion viewing hours in the first 28 days of its release on Netflix. 

Fans are eager to see what happens next! They also can't wait to find out who the scary robot doll's "boyfriend" will be.

"Can't believe the squid game doll will have a boyfriend before I have a girlfriend?" one Twitter user joked.
