The Oxford English dictionary has revealed its surprising choice for 2015.

For the first time ever the word of the year isn’t even a word at all.

The official Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year is: the “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji.

According to the panel deciding the word it was selected because it best reflected the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015.

The use of emojis skyrocketed over the last year and the use of the word “emoji” has tripled since 2014.

The pictograph ultimately came out on top of a shortlist that included “ad blocker,” “Dark Web,” “lumbersexual,” “refugee,” “on fleek,” and “they.”

But not everyone is happy about the selection of the word.
