Love at first sight: A reality or a made up phenomenon?

We've heard many stories of people who claim that when they laid eyes on each other for the first time, they knew that the other person was the one. But is this really a thing?

Love, at first sight, is definitely not a thing.

This particular topic was sparked when I was recently chatting with a couple who had been dating for just a few months. I can't deny that they are very much in love, but I was shocked to find out that both of them admitted to falling in love the very first time they were together. I'm not buying it!

Love is a deep, complicated emotional feeling that you have towards someone. Therefore, it is impossible, in my opinion, to love someone who you have just met.

Yes, there's lust, there's craving affection, and there's wanting to get to know someone a bit better, but I am of the firm belief that this 'phenomenon' does not exist. It's almost like going to maths class and knowing the entire syllabus in one day.

What does science have to say? Well, according to Big Think, research has been conducted which found that 'love at first sight' is basically a positive illusion that couples use to strengthen their relationship - the illusion that they have known from the get-go they were meant for each other.

Okay, I need to be honest - I have used the "I loved you the first time I saw you" line before, but if I'm truly honest, it wasn't true - sorry to the ladies who fell for this!

Do you think love at first sight is a thing, or could it be something couples make up to fool themselves into making them fall more in love with each other?
