WhatsApp update could replace cell numbers

Reports have revealed that WhatsApp is testing a ‘personal handles’ feature that will eradicate the need for cell numbers on the app.

WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a few new features that many believe should have existed from day one. From its inception, the app has required a phone number in order to sign up and create an account, but this could change very soon.

A report by Mashable revealed that the app’s latest beta testing version is allowing people to select their own username.

Version 25.17.10.70’s ‘personal handle’, aka username, is similar to what Instagram makes use of. According to the article, here’s how this feature will work:

This update is focusing on allowing WhatsApp users to communicate with others without having to share their cellphone numbers. Thus, increasing privacy in cases of group chats.

If you’re in a group chat with someone who has changed their username, you’ll get an update (just as if someone new has joined the group or if someone has left).

WhatsApp usernames

You will be able to create a username that includes letters, numbers, underscores and periods. These are not websites or email addresses so it cannot start with “www” or end with “.com”.

WhatsApp is testing a few methods of ensuring these ‘personal handles’ remain clean and safe. Here are some of the rules:

  • Each username must have one letter.

  • It must include ONLY lowercase letters, numbers 0-9, periods and underscores.

  • No domains are allowed.

  • It must be between three and 30 characters.

  • It cannot begin or end with a period, nor can there be consecutive periods.

The system is still be fine tuned and WhatsApp has not released any updates on their official blog about the release date. We’ll ensure we keep you updated on a wider rollout!
