Self-expression is something teens around the world are encouraged to explore and for this 17-year-old British Columbia student, this meant experimenting with outfit choices. But, when she was sent home from school for an ‘inappropriate’ outfit that was deemed ‘distracting’, her father went on an epic rant on social media – and it has the world talking!

As schools hope to equip learners with the necessary tools to navigate life beyond their time in the institution, Karis was devastated after she was sent home for an ‘inappropriate’ outfit her school deemed ‘distracting’.

Karis was shocked because she wore a simple white turtleneck underneath a black knee-length dress and there wasn’t any excessive showing of skin. So, naturally, she was devastated after being sent home for an outfit the school deemed ‘distracting’ – but her father wasn’t having any of it.

In an epic rant, Christopher Wilson, the girl’s father, says: “This is unacceptable. We shouldn’t treat our females like this. We shouldn’t be telling them they can’t dress a certain way. This is absurd.”

He adds: “After a short period of time, she was centered out by the teacher and was told the outfit she was wearing made or could make her or the teacher’s assistant, who was a male, feel uncomfortable.”

Christopher continues by saying that if you’re a teacher and you’re distracted by clothing your students are wearing, then you are in the wrong profession. “Maybe you should try something new,” he says.

The school said that the girl’s outfit allegedly reminded them of lingerie because of the lace that was on the dress.

In support of Karis, students at the school staged a walk out in protest of her punishment, holding up signs saying “I am not my dress” and “My education is more important than what I wear.”
