This latest sewage spill has us baffled over the unsanitary conditions hospital patients and workers are forced to operate under. 

A video capturing a raw sewage spill outside King Edwards VIII hospital has gone viral on TikTok.

Many users commented on how the situation has gone from “bad to worse”.

Some of the distressed comments include: 

  • “It stinks." 
  • “Look at that, raw sewage, straight onto the street."
  • “I’ve been inside for an hour already and it hasn’t slowed down … Gross.”
  • “The minute you open your food the smell just puffs up. How are you going to eat? I truly feel sorry for the people who are here every day to work because this is unbearable."
  • “You sometimes often see faeces and toilet paper just laying there. The smell is enough to kill you.”

However, this isn’t shocking news for this area. Merely a week before, the Daily News reported that street vendors trading outside the hospital complained that the Department of Water and Sanitation's interventions to stop the sewage leak outside the facility's entrance was in vain as the drainage system would be blocked again after a few days. 

The situation has not gotten any better. 

The vendors told the publication that the sewage flowing onto the pavement and part of Sydney Road has been going on for two years.

The blocked pipes and sewage spills are now a crisis for the municipality

The water and sanitation department reportedly arrived to clean up and “try and do damage control”. However,  the health and well-being of those who are in this area remain at risk.
