Even though Grootboom presented the news in isiXhosa, she is much loved by many South Africans who may not necessarily be isiXhosa speaking.

Case in point? J Sbu grew up watching Mama Noxolo deliver the news every night with his family even though his family is isiZulu speaking.

Noxolo Grootboom started her career in broadcasting as a typist and made her way onto South African television screens where she anchored for more than two decades.

Some of her career highlights include when she officiated former President Nelson Mandela's funeral on behalf of the SABC. She once again was called in, five years later, to officiate the funeral of the late Winnie Madikizela Mandela.

Next week Tuesday, uMama Grootboom, who is in her sixties, will take her final bow in front of the camera as a news anchor.
