Human Biltong: It’s not what you’re thinking... or is it?
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
A biltong shop based in Lephalale has gone viral for it’s unique name that has left many locals scratching their heads.

With all our glorious languages and vibrant cultures, it’s fair to say things can get a tad lost in translation.
The latest linguistic caper revolves around a rather unique name for a biltong shop in Lephalale, Limpopo. Pieter and Annetjie opened their shop 25 years ago and didn’t really think much of the name choice.
However, ‘Human Biltong’ has left locals and holiday-makers whipping their heads around for a double-take.
Hold your horses (and biltong) because they most certainly do not sell biltong made from humans. The kiosk is simply named after their Afrikaans surname, Human (which is pronounced 'he-mun').
Pieter, 84, told TimesLIVE Premium: "My wife Annetjie and I opened the kiosk 25 years ago. We never even thought the name would create a fuss - it was just our surname."
They're situated just down the road from the Hi-Q filling station, on the way to Polokwane and Botswana.

"You should see the Americans who visit the curio shop," Pieter chuckled. "Their eyes nearly pop out. Every one of them gets out of the Kombi, stretches and glances across the road in our direction. Then their eyes go wide and they grab their camera bags."
Pieter hilariously added that no "Humans" are harmed in the making of their tasty biltong. You can breathe a sigh of relief as there is no need to worry about being part of the next batch.
He also confessed that some tourists are even too scared to pop inside the shop. "I had a tourist come in and ask if we really made human biltong. I joked and said yes. Then he pointed to his shin and asked if I could use it. I told him the shin wouldn't make very nice biltong - and we both laughed before he left with some of the real stuff."
