Bayview Station's back! Residents of Chatsworth can ditch expensive public transport and e-hailing fares for cheap, convenient train rides!
Good news for commuters in Chatsworth! After four long years, train services have finally resumed.
This vital route provides an affordable and efficient way to travel, especially with the rising cost of living.
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) announced the restart on 28 March, following extensive repairs to infrastructure damaged during the lockdown.
These repairs included fixing damaged rail lines, replacing stolen cables, and restoring station buildings in Chatsworth, specifically Bayview Station.
According to IOL, the ‘People’s Train’ hit the tracks after refurbishments were made at the Havenside, Bayview, Westcliff, Chatsglen, and Merebank stations.It was also reported that ticket prices would cost a third of what would be paid for a taxi or bus per trip. A trip from Chatsworth to Durban will now cost commuters R5.30.
The People’s Train has the potential to accommodate up to 1,200 passengers in six coaches.
While this is currently a shuttle service, it's a significant step towards full-service restoration. PRASA is committed to ongoing repairs and aims to return all 40 train lines to full operation.
