Woman loses job for using ChatGPT

AI can be your best friend. It can also cost you a job. Just ask this woman.

A young Australian creative consultant recently shared how she missed out on a part-time job worth an extra $20,000 (just over R360,000) a year.

How? Well, because of her “heavy use” of ChatGPT during the recruitment process.

Alexandra was asked to streamline a list of daily tasks for a trial exercise.

She decided to brainstorm her ideas, then ask ChatGPT to polish them into a neat, digestible format.

Efficient, right? Well… not according to her potential employer.

Soon after submitting the task, she received a polite “Thanks, but no thanks” email, citing her reliance on AI as the dealbreaker.

Alexandra was left confused, wondering why using a tool to improve workflow was a problem.

After sharing her story on TikTok, she realised just how many people are either afraid of, or feel threatened by, AI tools like ChatGPT.

She insisted that it’s no different from having a digital assistant.

However, this is the kind you can boss around without worrying about tea breaks.

Recruitment expert Roxanne Calder weighed in, saying AI has absolutely entered the recruitment space, with candidates submitting AI-generated CVs and cover letters.

The catch? While AI is a great tool, it should never replace your own voice, creativity, or personal touch.

She makes a great point. Learn to use ChatGPT to assist, not replace.

It’s like seasoning a meal. A little spice enhances it, but too much ruins the dish.

The reality is AI is here to stay. We can’t change that and there’s no going back.

Just remember that employers are still hiring humans, not robots. So stay smart and authentic.
