Mr & Mrs East Coast turn heads at the Durban July
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
They call him Mr ECR for a reason! Darren and Anna brought the heat, the fashion, and the fairy-tale win at this year’s Durban July.

It was one of the most eye-catching couple moments at this year’s Durban July.
East Coast Breakfast host Darren Maule and his wife, the effortlessly elegant Anna Banana, turned heads and stole hearts with their sophisticated designer looks infused with a proudly Mzansi twist.

As special guests in East Coast Radio’s luxurious five-star Sinayo ECR Suite, Darren and Anna clearly understood the assignment: bring your A-game, and then some!
Darren (affectionately known as Mr ECR) embodied the station’s signature yellow in a statement coat that was anything but ordinary.
The man behind this masterpiece? Durban’s own Sandile “Duke” Ndabezitha from Duke Clothe Your Soul.

The striking yellow lapels against a bold black backdrop made sure Darren wasn’t just attending Durban July, he was owning it.
Interestingly, the fashion fairy tale began thanks to Hope Mbhele from Shaka iLembe, who introduced Anna to the supremely talented Kwenzi Nkomo from Indoni Fashion House.

Anna’s timeless black net wrap-around was crafted to complement Darren’s outfit, and it was Kwenzi’s team who connected Darren with Duke.
A double designer collab? OMG - ultra couple goals!

The fashion brief was clear - sophisticated, uniquely South African, and race-day ready.
Anna rocked a tailored black tuxedo jacket (a nod to her signature structured style) paired with a dramatic gold statement necklace and emerald-green drop earrings from her long-time friend Lauren Ginn of Lauren Ginn Accessories.

“Supporting local was always part of the plan,” Darren said. “Anna’s worn Lauren’s pieces for over a decade, and this look was perfect.”
Duke styled Darren in classic head-to-toe black under the bold coat, skipping the tie for a laid-back, polished look.
Gold accents finished the outfit, including his favourite vintage Christian Dior onyx-and-gold cufflinks (a treasured 50th birthday gift from Anna’s folks).
Naturally, Darren completed the look with a pair of proudly South African Chappies socks, a Father’s Day present from his fur babies, Max and Gemma.

The inspiration behind Darren’s marvellous look
When asked about his creative direction, Duke explained his vision beautifully:
“I wanted to honour both our cultural heritage and our natural tourist attractions. The jacket’s structure symbolises the mountains, its layering mirrors the Drakensberg’s rugged terrain, and the different prints reflect the textures of Izintaba zoKhahlamba. The asymmetric panel represents the summit itself - the peak of Mzansi beauty.”

To make it personal, Darren handwrote vernacular translations on the jacket’s asymmetric panel. This was the final, intimate touch that made this Marvels of Mzansi moment truly one for the books.

Social media sensations (and a fairytale bet)
When photos of the dashing duo surfaced online, fans went wild, with Darren’s posts racking up over 150,000 views.
“The love from my listeners and followers is incredible,” he shared. “People root for our romance and seeing how warmly they’ve embraced Anna means the world.”
To wrap the day in true fairytale fashion, Anna asked Darren to place a bet on a horse called The Real Prince (purely for the name) 10 minutes before the main race.
To their delight and surprise, The Real Prince crossed the line first.

A perfect ending to a perfect Mzansi day.
