Marvels of Mzansi: How to slay this year’s Durban July theme
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast / Skyye Ndlovu
Marvels of Mzansi? It isn’t about Iron Man, babes. Here’s your ultimate guide to slaying this year’s HollywoodBets Durban July!

The Hollywoodbets Durban July is upon us.
If you’re anything like most of us, you’re probably still scratching your head, trying to figure out how to dress for this year’s theme - Marvels of Mzansi.
Now, before you lose the plot and start dusting off your Iron Man suit or Black Panther claws… let’s clear this up.
It’s not those kinds of marvels. Nah, fam.
This year’s theme is a celebration of Mzansi magic in its truest, most beautiful form.
So, what does “Marvels of Mzansi” actually mean?
Think about everything that makes South Africa marvellous.
From our rich heritage, diverse cultures, and breathtaking landscapes to our iconic music, street styles, and trailblazing icons.
It’s about paying tribute to the soul of the country. Our colours, textures, people, stories, and natural wonders - all through bold, creative fashion.
As Stephen Marshall from Gold Circle puts it, “Our pride in Mzansi’s heritage and culture extends beyond sporting excellence; it’s reflected in the innovation, tenacity, and resilience of its people.”
In other words, this is your chance to wear your Mzansi pride loud, proud, and fabulously.
Where to draw inspiration
Here’s where the fun begins, because Marvels of Mzansi invites you to go big, go bold, and get a little wild with it:
South African heritage & culture:
Think designs by Esther Mahlangu, Zulu beadwork, Ndebele prints, or Basotho blankets; but with a modern, high-fashion twist.

The great outdoors:
Our coastlines, mountains, and savannas aren’t just for postcards. Use the deep blues of our oceans, the earthy tones of our inland, our vibrant sunsets or the lush greens of KZN’s hills as your colour palette.

Mzansi fusion:
Mash up elements from different South African cultures into one outfit. Try something that's never been done before - like a Venda-inspired print with modern isiZulu beadwork? Oooo... that sounds like something we'd marvel at.
Modern Marvels:
Maybe you want to be super different? Why not try something with futuristic silhouettes, textured fabrics, and statement pieces that tell a uniquely South African story. This would definitely turn heads and might inspire some young designers to think ahead of the times.
Don’t forget the makeup & accessories
Your look isn’t complete without the extras.
Channel the shimmer of the ocean, the glow of an African sunset, or the textures of our fantastic flora and fauna.
Expect to see bold makeup looks, statement headpieces, and jewellery inspired by indigenous designs and modern glam.

Now, go forth young Marvel and plan that showstopper.
Remember: no Iron Man suits, please.
