Stuart Baxter became the first Bafana Bafana coach to beat Nigeria in a competitive match with a 2-0 victory on Saturday.
I like his defensive approach to the game, which ensures tactical discipline. South Africa is a country richly blessed in individual ability, but the tactical side of the game needs some serious work.
When I saw our resolute defence keeping the Nigerians at bay in the opening stages of the game, I was so impressed. It showed me that we will not see a repeat of the dismal performances of AFCON 2014.
In that tournament, we played beautiful attacking football, but we left ourselves open at the back. We scored first in each of our three games but went on to concede silly goals and failed to win even a single match.
Attack-wise, we need not worry too much, that comes naturally to us as South Africans. We just needed a coach like Baxter to take care of our defence.
We must also remember that this is his second tenure and comes after he spent some time in the country coaching at club level. He now understands our football and players better.
