Hot air balloon ride gone wrong leaves one dead
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast / Skyye Ndlovu
Up, up, and... oh no. Mexico’s dreamy Balloon Festival took a tragic turn mid-lift-off. One man’s heroic act ended in heartbreak.

There’s something both magical and mildly terrifying about hot air balloons.
Floating gently above the earth in a giant wicker basket powered by open flame? What could possibly go wrong?
Well, this past weekend in Mexico, we got a tragic reminder.
On Sunday morning (11 May 2025), during the city of Zacatecas’ very first Balloon Festival (and likely its last if we’re honest), disaster struck.
Three hot air balloons were lined up on the ground, ready to ascend into the skies, when one of them suddenly broke free of its tether.
At the same time, a flash fire erupted in its basket. Not exactly part of the planned festivities.
Inside were three people. One man managed to get the other two out safely, but in a cruel twist of fate, as the balloon began to lift off, he became tangled in a rope.
The balloon, now on fire and no longer grounded, carried him into the sky - and, tragically, he eventually fell.
The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Luicio “N”.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but there was sadly nothing they could do.
Local government official Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza confirmed the incident, offering condolences via Facebook and promising a thorough investigation.
He also called for stricter safety checks for public events - a fair suggestion, considering the outcome.

It’s a sobering reminder that while balloon rides look dreamy on Instagram, you’re essentially standing in a glorified picnic basket dangling from a giant fireball.
May Luicio rest in peace and may organisers everywhere triple check their tethers.
