Helen Zille’s Showmax Roast drops this Friday

Well, here’s something you probably didn’t have on your 2025 bingo card.
Helen Zille, the DA heavyweight and unofficial President of Twitter threads, is about to get roasted on Showmax this Friday, 16 May.
No, we don’t mean over a glass of Chardonnay at a Constantia braai. We mean proper, ruthless, laugh-out-loud, hold-nothing-back kind of roast.
She shared a TikTok video on the night of the live show, and she seemed fairly excited.

But wait - who’s brave enough to roast Helen Zille, you ask? Only some of the boldest voices in South Africa, of course.
Loyiso Gola, Bongani Bingwa, JJ Tabane, Rian van Heerden, and Londie London are sharpening their comedic knives and going in.
If you thought your group chat was savage, wait until you see this lineup firing their best shots at Ouma Helen.
Wait - did Helen actually agree to this?
Yup. According to The Citizen, when Showmax first approached her about the roast, she thought she was being invited for a nice little Sunday lunch.
“They said, ‘Do you want to do a Roast?’ and I thought, ‘That’s like a Sunday lunch - sure!’” she confessed.
Honestly, this might be the most Helen Zille thing to ever Helen Zille.
Now why would one of SA’s most famously opinionated politicians sign up for public humiliation?
It turns out, Helen’s trying to lighten up a little, for the grandkids.
She says she wanted to prove she’s not as terrifying as Twitter might suggest, and to show the little ones that Gogo Zille can actually take a joke.
“I have this image of being such a fierce and terrible person - someone unable to take a joke - and of course, that’s not true,” she said.
“I’d like them to know a bit more about the real me, all the different sides. Especially the fact that we need to be able to laugh at ourselves.”
If you’re new here, Helen Zille is no stranger to controversy.
She’s one of those political figures people either love, love to hate, or pretend not to have an opinion about in case she tweets them directly.
Who knows though? This roast might just show Mzansi a softer, funnier, and surprisingly self-deprecating side of the politician.
Could this be the start of the greatest political rebrand in South African history?
Listen, if Helen Zille manages to survive a roast from Loyiso Gola without packing up and moving to Knysna permanently, she might just have our votes in 2029.
Or at the very least, our respect for having a sense of humour.
