Google just threw some playful shade at Apple over those iPhone 17 designs rumors.

Tech companies aren’t exactly known for their sense of humour.

Most of the time, their idea of “fun” is adding a new emoji or releasing an AI that accidentally confuses your grandma for a houseplant.

Every now and then though, a glimmer of cheekiness breaks through the cloud of self-importance.

This week, that honour goes to Google.

Rumour has it (and yes, we’re emphasising rumour) that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 might be taking a few design inspirations from Google’s Pixel line.

Here's what the iPhone 17 is rumoured to look like.

Seem familiar?

Google caught wind of the whispers and instead of quietly smirking into their rooibos tea, they decided to have a laugh.

I won’t spoil the whole thing for you (you can watch it below), but let’s just say it’s basically Google’s way of saying, “Hey Apple… nice of you to catch up… again.”

The Pixel roasted the iPhone, right from Night Sight vs Night Mode to Magic Eraser vs Clean Up.

The phones roasted each other like two passive-aggressive cousins at a family braai.

Even though the voiceovers sound like they were borrowed from 1997, the message comes through loud and clear:

Google’s been there, done that, and they’ve got the receipts.

Is it petty? Absolutely.

Is it entertaining? Weirdly, yes.

Is it the start of a full-on smartphone roast battle? One can only hope.

Check out the video below and decide for yourself: is Google being playful, or is this the nerdiest flex of 2025?
