Four more languages to make debut in school system

There will be more subjects to choose from for learners.
South African schools will soon be getting more home languages to choose from within its school curriculum, according to Education Minister Angie Motshekga.
She was presenting her departmental budget speech this past week. Motshekga stressed that given the demographics of the country, more than 80% of learners will continue to learn in a language other than their mother tongue.

The education minister confirmed that there will be more languages added to the South African school curriculum.

These additional new languages the education minister wants to include are:
The department is also in the process of signing with Tanzania on the development of a Kiswahili curriculum. Kiswahili, which is also known as Swahili language, is the official language of the East African community.
This would include countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.

Had it not been for the COVID-19 pandemic, the department would've already been piloting Kiswahili from Grades 4-6 in 2021 to 2023.
