When it's Friday, you know the weekend has begun.

The last FRY-YAY of July promises to be fun. So here are five things you need to know before you step outside today:

1. 

A suspected hitman has been nabbed at a roadblock at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza, while on a bus traveling to the Western Cape. The police set up the roadblock after receiving a tip-off on the whereabouts of the suspect, who was being pursued for a string of crimes, including murder, car-jacking and kidnapping in Durban.

2. 

Queen Bey is about to enter a new era and she’s dedicating her new album to her godmother, Uncle Jonny, and “all of the pioneers who originate culture.” Today marks the release of Beyoncé’s upcoming seventh album, Renaissance.

3. 

In Australia, $2.7 million (R31 million) dollars allocated for the construction of a state-of-the-art Koala research facility has been redirected for the construction of a roller-coaster. Environmentalists have been left heavily disappointed by the move, with a representative from the Gold City Council claiming that taxpayers had been “taken for a ride”.

4. 

Sebastian Vettel, one of Formula 1’s most decorated drivers, has announced that he is set to retire from the sport at the end of the current season. Vettel called it a “difficult decision,” and the four-time world champion has been called “an honourable competitor, and even greater friend” by the GOAT, Lewis Hamilton.

5. 

South Africa’s population has officially climbed to 60 million people. Risenga Maluleke, the country’s statistician-general, said that the number of people living in the country rose by 640 074, with over half the population living in KZN, Gauteng and the Western Cape.
