Durban has a poo predictor informing locals if beaches are safe

UKZN experts launched a new app to provide real-time advice to swimmers on whether it is safe to take a dip at Durban beaches.

The new website Woz’Olwandle (Come to the sea) uses a computer model to crunch a wide range of data to estimate the likely concentrations of E. coli at several local beaches over 24 hours.

Durban is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world.

However, with overcrowding, pollution, and other health hazards, it can be difficult to know if the water is safe to swim in.

Now, a new ‘poo predictor’ is helping swimmers make sure their beach visits are safe.

According to Daily Maverick, this was developed by researchers from the University of KwaZulu-Natal where the ‘poo predictor’ is a mobile phone application that uses data from water samples and other sources.

It's able to create a real-time picture of water quality at Durban beaches.

The app also includes information about the current tides, wind, and weather conditions, as well as a list of hazardous materials that may be present in the water.

Using data from water samples taken at Durban beaches, the app can accurately predict the levels of fecal coliform bacteria in the water.

This bacteria can cause serious illnesses if ingested, and the app’s predictive algorithm helps swimmers make informed decisions about where to swim and when.

The app also provides information about the closest public bathrooms and medical facilities in case of an emergency.

The ‘poo predictor’ is the latest innovation in beach safety and is helping to ensure that Durban beaches are safe for swimmers and visitors.

The app is free to download, making it easy for anyone to get up-to-date information about water quality and other beach hazards.

With the help of this app, Durban beachgoers can have peace of mind that their beach visits are safe and enjoyable.
