Does your cat secretly hate you? Here’s how to fix it
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast / Skyye Ndlovu
Think your cat hates you? It’s probably not personal. Here’s how to read the signs and get back in their good books.

Cats are mysterious little creatures.
One minute they’re curled up in your lap, purring like a tiny engine, and the next they’re giving you a death stare from under the couch.
If you’ve ever wondered whether your cat actually hates you… well, it’s complicated.
Newsweek spoke to expert veterinarian, Marc Smith, for some insight. According to him, cats don’t really hate like humans do.
Instead, they feel fear, anxiety, discomfort, and frustration; and they’re pros at showing it in their own dramatic way.

Signs your cat might not be your biggest fan
If your feline friend is acting a little cold lately, here’s what to look out for:
- They’re hiding in weird places: When a cat’s anxious or uncomfortable, they vanish like furry little ninjas. Whether it’s behind the couch, inside a closet, or squeezed into a shoebox that’s way too small.
- Hissing and dilated pupils: Think of this as your cat’s version of “back off, human.” You get bonus points if it comes with a dramatic paw swipe.
- Peeing on your stuff: If you find a little surprise on your favourite hoodie, it’s less about revenge and more about stress. They’re mixing their scent with yours as a weird little coping mechanism. Gross, but it’s kind of sweet…
However, don’t panic just yet. If your cat’s giving you side-eyes, disappearing acts, or the occasional hissy fit, it doesn’t mean you’re doomed to be mortal enemies.
It just means they’re trying to tell you something in their own dramatic, whisker-twitching way.
Luckily, with a little effort (and maybe a few treats), you can get back on their good side. Here’s how:
How to win your cat’s trust (and maybe their love)
Bonding with a cat isn’t instant. Unlike a Disney movie, it takes time, patience, and a bit of bribery. Here’s how to get started:
- Playtime is key: Make time to play around with them. Grab a toy, wave it around like a fool, and let them chase it. Bonus treats (bribery) also never hurt.
- Stick to a routine: Cats love consistency. Feed them, play with them, and leave them alone at the same time every day.
- Respect their boundaries: If your cat doesn’t want to be touched, don’t take it personally. Some cats are social butterflies, and others are moody introverts. It’s best to know which one you’ve got to avoid an awkward relationship.

In short; be patient, pay attention, and don’t expect cuddles on demand.
Cats are independent, mysterious, and sometimes a little dramatic; but that’s part of their charm.
Earn their trust, respect their space, and before you know it, you’ll be their favourite human.
Well - at least the one they tolerate the most.
