In light of growing conversations around a new Covid-19 variant, East Coast Breakfast recently spoke to one of the country’s leading experts, Professor Tulio de Oliveira.

The internationally respected scientist offered valuable insight and much-needed reassurance.

Addressing public concerns about the latest Covid-19 variant (Nimbus), Professor Tulio was clear: “The first thing is there is nothing to be concerned about.”

The variant, an Omicron lineage known as NB.1.8.1, is currently listed as a Variant Under Monitoring (VUM) by the World Health Organization.

According to Prof. Tulio, this means it’s at the lowest level of concern.

“At the moment, there is no reason to be concerned, especially in South Africa,” he reassured listeners.

While the variant has gained attention globally, local health surveillance has not raised any alarms.

Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi has since reiterated much of what Prof. Tulio shared during his interview.

Speaking at the fourth G20 Health Working Group meeting in Johannesburg, Motsoaledi confirmed that while the NB.1.8.1 variant has been reported in 22 countries, including India, parts of Asia, Europe, the US, and Australia, there is no cause for concern in South Africa right now.

“All we are saying is that this is under surveillance, and if there is anything to be done, we will inform the public,” he said.

The minister reminded South Africans of simple, practical steps to stay safe during the winter season:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Cover your cough or sneeze
  • Stay at home if you’re unwell
  • Wear a mask if you suspect you have flu symptoms

With influenza cases on the rise, especially during colder months, those showing any respiratory symptoms are encouraged to follow these precautions and avoid close contact with vulnerable individuals.
