A new nickname is making the rounds for the South African women’s hockey team and the public is not here for it.

The SA team have been named, 'amaStokoStoko'.

The post that features this unique name has been shared across various social media platforms, with users requesting a change to the nickname. Much controversy and debate has surrounded this name. Check out the post here:

Many social media users have clapped back at the admin, stating that 'amaStokoStoko' is "degrading" and "disrespectful".

Sky explains that in Afrikaans, "stokke" means sticks i.e hockey sticks. However, in isiZulu, "stoko" is slang for "stock", in reference to girls. 

Here's what the internet has to say on the matter:

  • "Stokostoko? Whoever came up with that name doesn't respect our Ladies... shame on that person"
  • ""So you guys find nothing wrong with them ladies being called "amaStokoStoko"?""
  • "Please don't call them that, can't we come up with better names"

"Amastokkestokke is the official name, we just shortened it..," comments the admin of the We Are South Africans page.
