There’s no denying that serving as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of a company is a feather in your cap; it’s an acknowledgement by that company that you have something to offer.

It also brings with it fantastic exposure to a network of people you might never have had the opportunity to meet and, in most cases, people you can learn a lot from, even as you add value yourself to the Board you have joined.

It makes you a much better executive within your company, as it opens your mind to how other companies operate and helps you understand how your company compares with the best in class.

But the opportunities are sometimes hard to access. Only listed companies have to have Non-Executive Directors (for governance reasons), although a few private companies are now seeing the benefit of having NEDs on their Boards.
