In KZN, we can all agree that the monkeys have become our resident neighbours. They barge in and raid our homes and businesses looking for anything they can feast on.

Meanwhile, other parts of the world, like Thailand, have much bigger problems to deal with. Elephants raiding spaces, which, as one can imagine, causes a fair amount of mayhem and damage.

While we can take measures to protect ourselves from monkeys, it will take much more to ensure elephants don't enter your home or place of business.

An elephant, Plai Biang Lek, known for causing havoc in the Thai community, raided a store on Monday, 2 June 2025.

According to People, "He strolled in and beelined for the sweet rice crackers. In shock, the shop's manager yelled at the large creature, in an attempt to get him to leave the store's premises without doing extreme damage.

Plai Biang Lek allegedly "calmly" devoured nine bags of the sweet rice crackers, several bananas, and at least one sandwich. The elephant racked up an estimated bill of 800 baht, equal to around $25 (R445)."

The shop owner said he tried to shoo the elephant away, but that doesn't even work on the monkeys.

"The park ranger, Danai Sookkhanthachat, told the outlet that the creature has a reputation for breaking into people's homes to raid their food pantries," reports People.

Plai Biang Lek is from the nearby national park, Kha Yai. While he is known for his reputation as a local thief, it was the first time he hit a grocery store.

It seems elephants know their way around finding snacks. In Sri Lanka, there's an elephant named Raja, which is known as the 'tax-collecting elephant'. He stops vehicles from passing on a busy freeway forcing them to give him snacks.
