Pallbearers dance to Amapiano at funeral ceremony
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
From flashy funerals to choreographed dance routines for the pallbearers, funerals are becoming the 'it' events of the season.

Are funerals becoming the latest fashion trend? Yes, indeed.
Funerals have traditionally been considered morbid, but the narrative on the last rites ceremonies is being reinvented. Families are becoming more inclined to plan funeral ceremonies that match their late loved ones' energies.
From flashy personalised caskets to elite decor, funerals have become classy events you don't want to miss.
In saying that, we have found a new addition to the list of 'wild' and unorthodox things that families have coordinated at funerals.
In a video shared on TikTok, four pallbearers perform a short dance routine while holding up the casket with their shoulders.
We are uncertain if these men are family members or part of the funeral service staff. If they are, in fact, staff, then we wonder if they had to have 'dance skills' listed on their resumes.
The four pallbearers don't just dance to a melancholic tune; instead, in true Mzansi style, they sidestep to Mnike, the hit Amapiano tune.
The person who was laid to rest was Alyssa. Her coffin was wrapped in a personalised print that showed off photos of Alyssa and her name. It was unique and stood out.

While it seemed unusual to see this, many people in the comments shared that this is the norm in the Caribbean.
- "They're based in Guadeloupe, French Caribbean and this is how they always do it, they're known for it. RIP Alyssa."
- "Yes we are in South America but Caribbean and we do this too, it’s very respectful. We mourn after. But we CELEBRATE your life first."
- "We often put music, but the dancing with the coffin started because of the Nigerian TikTok trends i believe. Though our funeral wakes are always very festive with music, rum, friends etc."
- "Actually, dancing with the coffin is a very old tradition — our African ancestors have been doing this for generations, long before TikTok."
- "Yes, this is how we do it to in Suriname (South America). Many Surinamese people have ancestral roots in Ghana."
