Shah Omar is a content creator who started his online career on Your First Dollar, a platform that helps influencers create a TikTok shop and earn money by getting hired by brands.

His content is focused on sharing insight into how he navigates around this line of work, however, many people have questioned the legitimacy of his work.

Omar recently posted a video on TikTok that resonated with many South Africans, speaking about how he once believed a salary of R50,000 would make him the rich uncle. But with our brutal economy, he would need way more to accomplish that childhood dream.

In the video, he explained his spending spree over two days which equated to more than R7,000, including purchases such as chargers, clothes, and food.

He made an obvious point about things being cheaper when he was a kid and had to let go of the idea that earning R50k a month would be more than enough to get you by comfortably.

His purchases, though, are not the most outstanding examples of the hight cost of living, considering he spent his money on expensive chargers and clothes.

How often will you buy a charger? And clothes from a store such as H&M will last a few years.

While Omar revealed that the 'Math ain't mathing', people on social media felt that his spending habits were the problem. Some thought he was being boastful.

One person wrote, "Spending R7K in 1 day is crazy, some of us are trying to survive with R5K the whole month."

Omar replied, saying, "I don’t make R50k per month. The point is that R50k per month used to be my idea of a RICH man’s salary."

Another wrote, "Everyone can survive with a salary of R20k or less the problem are HABITS."

Lindsay put things into perspective when she wrote, "R50k a month is nothing considering you only come home with R36k a month after tax etc. Then it's rent (or bond), car etc. Times are tough! You need to earn like R70k + per month to live! Sad!"
