Danny Guselli shares special memory for World Football Day
World Football Day recognises the beautiful game. We asked Danny Guselli to share something in honour of the day.
On 25 May 2025, it is World Football Day. The United Nations created a day honouring the 'beautiful game' and how it has brought the world together.
The United Nations says: "Football, as a prominent global sport, holds a unique position. Beyond mere recreation, it is a universal language spoken by people of all ages, transcending national, cultural, and socio-economic boundaries. This shared passion fosters a sense of community and national pride."
In addition, this sport serves as a platform to advance gender equality and promote physical and emotional well-being.
Football is a long-standing tradition in many communities. Sometimes, the passion can be so intense that it causes rivalry, but for the most part, this sport is an ambassador of community and union.
We asked our ex-footballer, Danny Guselli, to share something special this World Football Day.
Danny shared a prominent memory that came to mind. He went on trial with a football club called Enköpings. After arriving in Stockholm and settling into his hotel, he received a call from the club informing him that the team coach would pick him up.
" I go downstairs, and this convertible BMW pulls up outside the hotel. And I'm like, 'Yoh', I recognise this guy. Like, who is he? He looks so famous. I couldn't believe the coach picked me up in the first place because I need to impress this guy. Right? So anyway, he shakes my hand and says, 'Hi, I'm Yesper'," said Danny.
At this point, the bells began ringing for Danny, who immediately recognised the coach. It was the legendary Jesper Blomqvist, the Swedish football player who played for Manchester United and Inter Milan. Danny grew up watching Blomqvist play and is a huge fan.
He says, " So the whole time in the car, I'm just trying not to fan girl. I'm just trying to keep my composure, and eventually I couldn't help it, and I just said, 'I'm a huge fan. I've watched you for years,' and then we laughed about it and had a joke."
"But I was in the car with Yesper Blomqvist, like a former Manchester United player, and now I have to go and impress him in training. Oh. Anyway, the trial went unbelievably well. He and I got on very well, and I had a great time at Enköpings", said Danny.
On 25 May 2025, we celebrate a day meant to unite people in the name of football. In the spirit of celebrating, we love how, after many years, Danny still got excited sharing the story of how he met one of his favourite players, Yesper Blomqvist.
