Dad forced to beg for toll money as he didn't have cash

In a world where everyone has gone cashless, why are some motorists still experiencing this at toll gates?

As holidaymakers make their way back home, we encourage everyone to stay safe on the roads and be prepared for potential traffic along major routes.

Another important consideration is to keep some cash on hand for toll roads. While many toll gates have transitioned to cashless systems, drivers still report inconsistencies, so it’s best to be prepared.

In a video shared on Instagram, a young woman shares how her father had to ask fellow drivers for help after realising he didn’t have any cash to pay at a toll gate.

She explains that her father forgot to bring cash and ended up asking other motorists for money.

While she may have exaggerated a little for effect, the comments under her post sparked an interesting conversation.

She asked, "Why don’t they accept cards at toll gates, though?"

One person's comment, which received 584 likes, said, "I've once been there, it is not nice."

While another person called it: "The most humbling experience."

  • "I'm sure one helped out. I was also once in the same situation as that guy, who got out of the car and paid for me. I said I’d wait for him at the next garage to give him, and despite the gap, I waited at the next stop."

  • "At least it was R14 imagine a R100 toll."

  • "My worst fear."

  • "This happened to me last week. I just parked on the painted island and started crying."
