Cannabis discovered in Haribo sweets in the Netherlands

A complete recall of the popular sweet brand Haribo was enforced recently after cannabis was detected in the sweets.

This story gave 'gummies' a whole new meaning. It legitimately left us concerned about the people producing sweets or candy in the factories.

While some might've been happy with the error in finding cannabis inside bags of Haribo's 'Happy Cola' sweets, others were left ill after they consumed the drug-laden sweets unintentionally.

BBC News reported, "Haribo is recalling packets of sweets in the Netherlands after some were found to contain traces of cannabis. Several people, including multiple members of one family, reported feeling unwell after eating from a 1kg pack of Haribo Happy Cola F!ZZ."

A spokesperson from the food safety board in the Netherlands (NVWA) shared that some people who consumed the sweets reported 'dizziness'. "The agency told Dutch broadcaster SBS6 that 'samples were taken and cannabis was found in them," reports BBC.

The NVWA spokesperson reportedly said that they are working with authorities to uncover how the contamination took place. Only three packs of the batch were contaminated, but Haribo has recalled the entire batch as a precautionary measure.

It is unclear whether the bags that contained the cannabis were original Haribo bags or fake.

BBC reports: "Haribo said the safety of its consumers was its highest priority, adding that it was taking the incident 'very seriously'. The confectionery giant said the recall was only in place in the Netherlands, with other regions unaffected. All other products are safe to consume."

The Haribo brand is a well-established and reputable company that has been producing quality products for over a century.

"HARIBO’s success has not been limited to the German market: as a global market leader in fruit gummies and liquorice, HARIBO is now available in more than 120 countries worldwide. HARIBO produces treats at 16 locations worldwide and employs more than 7,000 people," the company shares on its website.

In South Africa alone, there have been many reports of fake goods circulating in spaza shops, which have led to illnesses and even some fatalities. Thankfully, there were no other reports of people falling ill in the Netherlands from the contaminated batch.
